Zelenskyy to Meet Trump in Washington After ‘No Deal’ Alaska Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following ceasefire talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska that ended without agreement.

In a statement on Saturday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine remained ready for “constructive cooperation” with international partners. He confirmed that he spoke with Trump by phone after the Alaska summit, with discussions lasting more than ninety minutes.

The announcement came as Russia continued military strikes across Ukraine. On Friday, Zelenskyy reported attacks in Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Donetsk regions. He stressed that the assaults demonstrated Moscow’s unwillingness to end the war. “On the day of the negotiations, they are also killing. And this says a lot,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

Ukrainska Pravda reported that Russian forces struck central Sumy, igniting a fire. Oleh Hryhorov, head of Sumy Oblast Military Administration, confirmed the attack targeted civilian infrastructure, adding that emergency crews were working at the site. Casualty details have not been released. Russia’s defense ministry denied responsibility, claiming Ukraine was attempting to disrupt the Alaska summit.

Meanwhile, Trump departed for Anchorage on Friday, telling reporters the talks with Putin could lead to a second summit focused on securing a peace agreement. He suggested European leaders, including Zelenskyy, might join future negotiations. Trump has previously warned that Putin would face “severe economic consequences” if he rejected peace efforts.

The Alaska summit, which drew significant international attention, ended without a ceasefire deal. It marked the latest attempt by Washington to broker dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv, amid continued hostilities and mounting civilian casualties across Ukraine.
