Tokyo tops list for 2025’s best ‘workcation’ destinations in the world

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has been named the world’s greatest city for a “workcation,” according to a 2025 research by International Workplace Group (IWG), a provider of flexible and hybrid workspaces.
The findings are included in IWG’s third annual “Work from Anywhere Barometer,” which rates the best places in the world for workcations, or places where tourists can combine work and play.
According to the survey, Tokyo’s “exceptional” broadband speed, transportation infrastructure, safety, culture, and recently introduced digital nomad visa are the reasons it ranked first.
The town “also benefits from proximity to mountains, coastal regions, and national parks ā ideal for hybrid workers seeking an exciting urban atmosphere alongside natural escapes,” IWG stated.
IWG used the following 12 criteria to rank 40 countries on a scale of 1 to 10:
- Climate
- Accommodation
- Food
- Transport
- Subsistence (the typical cost of a cappuccino in the city’s expat neighborhood)
- Broadband speed
- Happiness
- The availability of adaptable work environments
- Cultural quality
- Availability/price of digital nomad visa
- Being close to national parks, mountains, or beaches
- Sustainability
Along with being close to beaches, mountains, or national parks, the digital nomad visa is a new need that allows professionals to live and work remotely while living outside of their country of permanent residence.
According to this year’s report, 86% of hybrid workers said that having flexible workspaces was a key factor in their decision to go somewhere.
According to Mark Dixon, founder and CEO of International Workplace Group, “employees now have the freedom to work wherever and whenever suits them best thanks to hybrid working and cloud technology.”
According to IWG, these are the top ten cities for workcations in 2025:
- Tokyo
- Rio De Janeiro
- Budapest
- Seoul
- Barcelona
- Beijing
- Lisbon
- Rome
- Paris
- Valletta
New additions to the list include Tokyo, Seoul, Rome, Paris, and Valletta. Due to its “ultra-fast internet, efficient public transport, and a thriving digital nomad community supported by South Korea’s digital nomad visa,” Seoul was included on the list, the survey said.
Despite falling from the top spot to third, Budapest is still a popular option based on its culinary and happiness scores.
Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, Mumbai, and Hong Kong are among the top ten Asian locations for business vacations, according to the survey.
Due to its excellent ratings in categories like food, happiness, broadband speed, and sustainability, Singapore continues to be a choice among hybrid workers. Its “island-wide 5G network coverage and seamless urban mobility” as well as its green areas were highlighted in the research.
Despite being well-liked, Barcelona, Beijing, and Lisbon were not included on this year’s list.
The survey identified a number of new workcation destinations, including Mexico City, Cape Town, Prague, Melbourne, Orlando, and Reykjavik. They performed well on factors like being close to nature and having a digital nomad visa.
“This trend is here to stay with many companies adopting flexible working and work from anywhere policies, particularly over the summer months for the long-term, which not only improves work-life balance and reduces burnout but also delivers significant productivity gains,” Dixon stated.
