As of Saturday, the situation is as follows:
Fighting
- According to the Ukrainian military, it attacked the Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region of Russia overnight, causing fire and explosions at the facility, which is one of the largest in the system of Russian energy corporation Rosneft and produces a variety of fuels.
- Additionally, according to the Ukrainian military, it hit a ship carrying drone parts and ammo from Iran in the port of Olya in the Astrakhan region of Russia.
- According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russia is getting ready to test its new nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable cruise missile and, if it is successful, intends to use the results to strengthen its negotiation position with the West.
- According to Ukrainian regional officials, a drone destroyed civilian property and started a fire in the Sumy region in the northeast, while Russia launched a ballistic missile into the Dnipropetrovsk region in eastern Ukraine, killing one person and injuring at least one more.
- According to Moscow’s Ministry of Defense, Russian forces also seized control of the Oleksandrohrad hamlet in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk area.
- Ahead of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia for its ongoing attacks on Ukraine. They also murder people on the day of the discussions. “And that speaks volumes,” Zelenskyy remarked.
Alaska summit
- The highly anticipated meeting between Trump and Putin took place in Anchorage, Alaska, where the Russian leader was given a US military flyover and the red carpet treatment as he disembarked.
- Following a shorter-than-anticipated meeting that fell short of its main objective—a settlement ending Russia’s war in Ukraine—both leaders gave succinct statements to reporters.
- Putin told reporters during the meeting that while his nation is dedicated to bringing the war to an end, the “primary causes” of the conflict must be eradicated.
- Putin also cautioned against attempts to use “backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress” and warned Ukraine and its European allies not to put a “wrench in the works.”
- Trump added that “many points were agreed to” during the “extremely productive meeting.” However, he acknowledged that there are still issues with Moscow, including one that is “significant.”
- Trump warned that “there is no deal until there is a deal” and stated that he would speak with President Zelenskyy and NATO officials over the phone to discuss the meeting.
- Trump said he hoped to meet with Putin again soon and thanked him for his time. Putin swiftly replied, laughing, in English, “Next time, in Moscow.” Trump seemed reluctant to accept this suggestion.
- Later, in an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that Zelenskyy and Putin plan to schedule another meeting in an attempt to achieve a ceasefire. Additionally, he emphasized that the Ukrainian leader must “get it done.”
- According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Russia’s ambassador to the US, Alexander Darchiev, announced that new talks will soon be held to address areas of stress in the two countries’ bilateral relations.
International aid
- In a new study, the Pentagon, USAID inspectors general, and the Department of State expressed concern that the Trump administration’s termination of independent aid monitoring contracts for Ukraine has raised the potential of waste, fraud, and abuse.
- The Norwegian government said that it would give Ukraine one billion kroner ($98.29 million) to buy natural gas before winter arrives. Following Russian missile strikes that damaged production facilities in the country’s east, Ukraine was compelled to increase its imports of gas.
