Prince Harry Marks Third Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s Death with Private Visit to Windsor

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, visited Windsor Castle on Monday to pay tribute to his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the third anniversary of her death. The visit underscores the continuing personal connection the Duke maintains with the royal family’s most significant resting place.

The Queen, who reigned for 70 years, died on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96. She was interred alongside her husband, Prince Philip, in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret, are also laid to rest there.

Prince Harry, 40, laid a wreath at the burial site, reflecting on the monarch’s enduring legacy. He previously visited the chapel privately on the first anniversary of her passing in 2023.

St. George’s Chapel holds additional significance for the Duke, as it was the venue of his wedding to Meghan Markle in May 2018. His latest visit follows his arrival in the United Kingdom for charity commitments, including the annual WellChild Awards, where he serves as patron.

Harry’s return comes amid ongoing tensions within the royal family. His relationship with his father, King Charles III, has been strained following disputes over security arrangements and limited contact in recent years. The Duke has not met his father in person since early 2024, shortly after the King disclosed a cancer diagnosis. Their last public interaction occurred during ceremonies linked to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022.

In past statements, Harry has expressed a desire for reconciliation, telling the BBC in May 2025 that he “would love reconciliation with my family.” Aides from both sides met in July, raising hopes for progress, though no confirmed meeting between Harry and King Charles has yet taken place during this visit.

The Duke is in the country without Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, or their two children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4. His schedule includes attending the WellChild Awards, an event recognizing young people living with life-limiting conditions and the caregivers who support them. He is expected to deliver a speech and present an award.

Observers note that Harry’s ongoing visits to Windsor highlight the continued resonance of Queen Elizabeth’s memory within both the royal family and the public. The late monarch’s passing marked the end of the longest reign in British history, a milestone that continues to frame discussions about continuity and change within the monarchy.
