Kobbie Mainoo Considering Manchester United Exit Amid Limited Opportunities

Kobbie Mainoo is weighing his future at Manchester United after limited playing time under head coach Ruben Amorim, raising uncertainty over the young midfielder’s role at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old academy graduate emerged as a key first-team player during the 2023/24 season. However, recurring fitness issues last term restricted his impact, and he has not featured in United’s opening two Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham.

Mainoo has been named as an unused substitute in both fixtures. With Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes currently anchoring United’s midfield, his path to regular minutes appears blocked.

Reports indicate that United are pursuing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, a move that could further complicate Mainoo’s chances of reclaiming a starting position. According to talkSPORT, Mainoo would consider leaving if a suitable transfer offer arrives before the summer deadline on September 1.

Mainoo’s current contract runs until June 2027, with an option for a further year. Despite discussions over an extension, negotiations stalled due to the player’s reported wage demands of around Ā£150,000 per week.

Chelsea have maintained strong interest in the England international since January. A potential transfer would provide Manchester United with a boost under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, given Mainoo’s homegrown status.

Since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag last November, Mainoo has made only 12 league starts. Amorim addressed the situation, explaining his selection choices. “He is fighting for the position now with Bruno,” Amorim told reporters. “When I changed to two midfielders, I left Mason Mount there because we wanted to score a goal. The team needed one holding midfielder near Bruno. So he just needs to fight for the position with Bruno, like it should be at Manchester United.”

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has voiced support for Mainoo, describing him as a talent who could flourish if a team were built around his abilities. Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the ex-England international noted, “I think he’s got the talent to build around, but you have to have the team functioning in a particular way.”

The uncertainty surrounding Mainoo comes at a time when Manchester United are seeking to strengthen their midfield, while also balancing financial constraints. His future at Old Trafford is expected to be resolved in the coming days as the transfer deadline approaches.
