Harry Kane Presents Legacy Cap to Djed Spence After England Debut

Harry Kane delivered an emotional tribute to Djed Spence as he presented the defender with his England legacy cap following his international debut in Belgrade. The moment came after England’s 5-0 victory over Serbia on Tuesday.

Spence, 25, entered the match as a substitute, making history as the first Muslim to represent the Three Lions. His appearance marked the culmination of a difficult career journey, defined by setbacks and resilience.

Spence joined Tottenham Hotspur from Middlesbrough in 2022 for £20 million. However, then-manager Antonio Conte described him as an “investment of the club,” limiting his opportunities. The right-back subsequently endured loan spells at Rennes, Leeds United, and Genoa with limited success.

His breakthrough came last season under Ange Postecoglou, who gave him a regular role during Tottenham’s injury crisis. His performances led to a national team call-up, where his debut was recognized with the symbolic cap presentation.

Kane, now playing for Bayern Munich, was Spence’s teammate for one season at Tottenham. Presenting the cap in the England dressing room, Kane acknowledged Spence’s persistence. “I saw this player three to four years ago at Tottenham and he had to go through a lot,” Kane said. “He had to keep his head up, he had to work hard, and now he’s an England player. I’m emotional because I know what it takes to get here.”

The England captain praised Spence’s family and support system, adding, “You deserve this one.” The presentation was met with applause from teammates before Kane and Spence embraced.

Spence expressed gratitude in his post-match remarks. “I’m grateful to make my debut. It’s been a long journey but finally made it here. God is great. Thank you,” he said.

Spence has previously spoken about the challenges he faced, including Conte’s dismissive remarks upon his arrival at Tottenham. “To hear comments like that wasn’t nice. It shatters your confidence a bit. But I am a fighter. Whatever I do, I will try my best,” Spence said last week.

Former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock also questioned Spence’s mentality early in his career. Warnock once stated, “He could be playing at a top club in England or in non-league in five years, I don’t know.” Spence later responded with a celebratory post on social media after winning the Championship play-off final with Nottingham Forest.

Reflecting on his journey, Spence said he keeps a “mental note” of those who doubted him and takes satisfaction in proving them wrong. His England debut now stands as a testament to his perseverance and development.
