Burnley complete signing of Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea

Lesley Ugochukwu has officially joined Burnley from Chelsea.

On August 4, The Athletic revealed that Burnley and Chelsea had completed a deal for the midfield player, increasing Scott Parker’s options in the number six and number eight positions.

Turf Moor has offered the 21-year-old a five-year contract.

It feels fantastic to sign with Burnley,” Ugochukwu remarked.

I was eager to learn more about the idea as soon as I learned that the club was interested in signing me. Maxime (Esteve) and the manager were both quite enthusiastic about the club and its future when I chatted with them. Given the club’s aspirations, I feel that this is the ideal move for me at this point in my career.”

Ugochukwu made 31 appearances while on loan at Southampton last season, scoring one goal and dishing out two assists, although he was unable to keep the team from being relegated to the Championship. His loan period was seen favorably by Chelsea, who thought he would attract a lot of interest.

The midfield player, who came through the academy and made 60 senior games for French team Rennes, signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea in August 2023 for an estimated €27.5 million (£23.5 million).

Before being loaned to Southampton, Ugochukwu made 15 appearances for Chelsea during that season, including six starts. He represented France at the Olympic Games last summer and has been capped by the country up to the under-21 level.

After Max Weiss, Quilindschy Hartman, Axel Tuanzebe, Loum Tchaouna, Kyle Walker, and Jacob Bruun Larsen, he is Burnley’s seventh acquisition of the window.
