Amaechi: I’ll resign if I don’t stop corruption as president

Rotimi Amaechi, a former Transport Minister and 2027 presidential candidate, has promised to eradicate corruption in the first month of his administration, whether he is elected or resigns.

In an interview on X Space on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the former governor of Rivers State committed.

If elected president, Amaechi also pledged to use the money saved from the removal of subsidies wisely for the nation’s growth.

Amaechi: I'll resign if I don't stop corruption as president

β€œI will thus eradicate corruption. I promise that corruption will vanish within the first month of my tenure. I’ll submit my letter of resignation and depart if it doesn’t go away. I’m serious,” he said.

During a Weekend Politics talk on X Space, Amaechi stated that the alliance started as a private discussion between him and Fayemi before the two agreed to include other influential politicians.

He criticized the government’s management of the subsidy windfall, claiming that a select group of governors and federal officials share the advantages and that they live extravagant lives.

β€œThe issue with the current administration is that the governors and three or four federal officials split the benefits of the subsidies. Additionally, the governors are having a good time with young girls at beach parties.

β€œI will oversee the government, so it won’t happen with me. To be honest, I am going to supervise the government,” he declared.

The former minister also stated his disapproval of the return of gasoline subsidy payments, calling it a step that would be harmful to the nation.

β€œI will oversee my government. I would not reinstate subsidies because it is not feasible given the current state of Nigeria’s economy,” he added.

β€œHowever, I have also stated that the withdrawal of subsidies is unsuccessful. Individuals’ pockets are being filled with money.

β€œI’ll make sure that Nigerians regain control over their finances after the subsidy is removed. If it occurs, poverty will be lessened and we will be able to buy.”

Along with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, and Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna, Amaechi announced his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in June. They joined forces to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform to run in the 2027 elections.

He has made it clear, time and time again, that if he wins the ADC presidential ticket in 2027, he is willing to serve only one term.

Speaking on Saturday, he promised that if he is given the ADC ticket, he has what it takes to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027, emphasizing that he has extensive knowledge of the President’s strengths and weaknesses.

β€œI assure you that I didn’t run for office against Tinubu. Tinubu is someone I know well. I am aware of his strengths. I am aware of his shortcomings. And I am certain that I will defeat Tinubu if I am permitted to fly the ADC flag,” he declared.
