Ohanaeze splits as faction backs Tinubu’s re-election

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo sociocultural organization, has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection campaign, claiming that the administration has shown a level of dedication to the South-East not seen since the Civil War ended 55 years ago.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the deputy national president of an Ohanaeze group, announced this in a statement released in Abakaliki on Friday, August 8, 2025.

Isiguzoro emphasized Tinubu’s effects in the South-East by pointing out that the Federal Government had set up N1.43 trillion for the building and repair of federal roads in the area, calling the action historic.

He also gave the President credit for approving a $3 billion project to modernize the Eastern Economic Corridor by converting the Port Harcourt–Aba–Ebonyi–Enugu–Makurdi–Lafia–Bauchi–Maiduguri railway from narrow gauge to standard gauge and for establishing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to promote economic growth.

As she assumes her new role, political analysts view her as a representation of the country’s changing political landscape, which prioritizes generational transition, diversity, and competency in leadership in Nigeria.

Another calculated move to draw and oversee investments in the region, he said, was the establishment of the South-East Investment Company.

The statement said that Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, had been assigned the responsibility of communicating the South-East governors’ and Igbo stakeholders’ joint decision over the President’s initiatives.

The statement partially stated, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo affirms that President Tinubu is diligently addressing the critical challenges confronting the South-East and the broader Igbo nation.”

“Everyone agrees to back his administration through 2031, and his reelection in 2027 is strongly supported. There are significant requirements attached to this support in order to meet our region’s urgent needs.”

Isiguzoro further claimed that opposition members in the area had launched “orchestrated media attacks” against Umahi, denouncing the acts and promising to no longer put up with them.

“The Federal Government is investing heavily in our area for the first time in more than 50 years. Ndigbo should support President Tinubu’s administration in order to capitalize on these initiatives and establish the Southeast as West Africa’s next economic center,” he said.

According to the group, a new alliance between the area and the current government is emerging and needs to be maintained in the interest of both parties.

“We implore opposition parties and other Igbo groups to stop media attacks on Senator Umahi in light of these events. The formation of false organizations purportedly funded to harass and threaten him is stupid and ineffective,” the statement continued.

Isiguzoro emphasized the South-East’s continuous support for Umahi and the Tinubu administration “as we collectively strive for a brighter future for Ndigbo,” vowing that the region will oppose any attempt to impede the ongoing progress.
