Warwick Davis Returns as Professor Flitwick in HBO’s Harry Potter TV Reboot

Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television adaptation, marking a significant return to the franchise. The actor originally portrayed the beloved charms professor in the film series and will now continue in the same capacity for the reboot.

The announcement was made on September 1 during the annual Back to Hogwarts fan celebration, which commemorates the fictional date when students return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Alongside Davis’s return, the event also confirmed additional casting updates for key characters in the series.

Filming began on July 14, 2025, at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden. The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with the series scheduled to premiere in 2027. The release coincides with the 16th anniversary of the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.

Davis will not reprise his other Harry Potter film role as Griphook the goblin banker, with actor Leigh Gill taking on the part. Other cast additions include Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey. Elijah Oshin has been cast as Dean Thomas, while Finn Stephens and William Nash will portray Draco Malfoy’s companions Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.

Leading roles have already been confirmed, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively. John Lithgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer has been cast as Professor McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Additional notable cast members include Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Bertie Carvel as Minister Cornelius Fudge, and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Ollivander.

The series will stream exclusively on Max in 2027 in the United States. Although not officially confirmed, UK distribution is expected on Sky or Now. Author J.K. Rowling is actively involved in the project and has previously reviewed early scripts.

While the reboot introduces new talent, it remains unlikely that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, or Rupert Grint will appear, given their past criticism of Rowling’s views on transgender rights. This divide has sparked debate among fans and industry observers, adding complexity to the reception of the series.

The Harry Potter reboot aims to deliver a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s books, with each season dedicated to a single novel. The series has generated significant global attention, with its extended timeline, expanded cast, and returning familiar faces positioning it as a cornerstone in HBO’s future programming lineup.
