Afghanistan Earthquake Kills More Than 600, Injures Thousands

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, killing at least 622 people and injuring more than 1,500, according to Afghan authorities.
The tremor hit towns in Kunar province near Jalalabad, close to the Pakistan border, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas as emergency services work to locate survivors and provide medical aid.
Local officials confirmed that hospitals in Jalalabad and surrounding districts are overwhelmed with casualties. Emergency relief operations have been hindered by damaged infrastructure and limited resources.
The earthquake is one of the deadliest to strike Afghanistan in recent years, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Past earthquakes in the region have caused widespread destruction due to fragile building structures and limited disaster preparedness.
International aid agencies have begun mobilizing support, though access to remote areas remains difficult. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
The disaster has drawn global attention, with humanitarian groups calling for urgent assistance to help the injured and provide shelter for those displaced.
