Liverpool have completed the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a deal worth £125 million, setting a new British transfer record. The agreement, confirmed ahead of the 7 p.m. transfer deadline, includes a FIFA-mandated solidarity payment to reward the clubs involved in the player’s early development.

As part of the deal, around £5 million will be distributed among Isak’s former clubs through the FIFA solidarity mechanism, which allocates funds to teams that trained players between the ages of 12 and 23. Isak’s journey has seen him rise across several European leagues. He began at AIK in Stockholm before moving to Borussia Dortmund as a teenager. A loan spell at Willem II reignited his form, leading to a successful stint at Real Sociedad, where he scored 44 goals in three seasons. Newcastle signed him in 2022 for £63 million, making him their record signing at the time.

At St James’ Park, Isak became a prolific scorer with 62 goals in 109 appearances. Last season, he netted 23 times in 32 Premier League matches, one of the highest tallies in the division. His form attracted persistent interest from Liverpool, who saw an initial £110 million bid rejected before Newcastle accepted the record-breaking offer.

Reports suggest Isak pushed for the move this summer, leading Newcastle to sanction the transfer after securing Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade as a replacement. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged his preference to retain the player but stressed that the decision factored in wider considerations beyond football.

For Liverpool, Isak’s arrival represents a major reinforcement of their attacking options under manager Arne Slot. The forward is expected to spearhead the club’s efforts in both the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
